Yvonna van Hulzen realised early on that she wanted to do her own thing. This notion, plus a burning love for fabric, led her to start clothing label Widdess in 1996. An unwavering sense of style and vision for the brand has helped her to weather over 20 years in the cut-throat fashion industry.
An impressive set of core garment styles is updated weekly in the most beautiful natural fabrics, linens and cottons in summer, nz wools in winter. The small runs and local manufacturing means that there is no wasted garments or piles of old stock, and any scrap fabrics are upcycled into weavings by one of her daughters. The samples are made in the creaky upstairs area of the Ponsonby Road store, the garments are manufactured in Central Auckland, and Yvonna spends her evenings knitting one off pieces for lucky customers. The store itself is a haven of soft flowing fabrics accompanied by carefully curated range of other NZ made treasures.
